Doi Mae Salong, Tribal Villages & Mae Sai

Set high amid magnificent mountain scenery, the village of Mae Salong was founded by Kuomintang soldiers who fled China after Mao Tse Tung’s victory in 1949. The unique combination of pack horses, hill tribes such as the Akha, Lisu, Mien, and Hmong, along with southern Chinese style houses, conjures up images of a quaint town reminiscent of Yunnan Province in China. Visitors can explore the local market, where a variety of fruit wines and liquors are available, including the highly sought-after local corn whisky.

Continuing the journey, we arrive at Mae Sai, the northernmost point of Thailand. This vibrant area serves as a fascinating observation point for border life, as Mae Sai is one of the few official land crossings between Thailand and Burma. Throughout the day, many Burmese cross over from Thakhilek to engage in work or business, often hurrying back before sunset. The main street is lined with shops offering an array of goods, including exquisite Burmese lacquerware, gems, jade, and other treasures from Laos and Burma. A delightful lunch at a local restaurant will provide a taste of the region's authentic flavors.

Destination Information

Doi Mae Salong

Doi Mae Salong is a mountainous area distinguished by its steep slopes and lush greenery, where terraced fields stretch across the hillsides, reflecting a long tradition of agricultural practice. The landscape is punctuated by small villages inhabited by diverse hill tribes, whose daily routines and traditional crafts continue to shape the local environment. The region’s distinctive tea plantations contribute not only to its economy but also to its visual identity, with neatly arranged rows of tea bushes following the contours of the terrain. The architecture in the villages combines practical design with cultural influences from Yunnan, evident in the style of homes and communal buildings. Historical layers are visible in remnants of military installations that recall the area’s strategic importance in past conflicts, providing a tangible link between history and present life. The atmosphere here is calm and measured, with a slower pace that contrasts with urban centers, allowing visitors to engage with both the natural setting and the enduring cultural practices of the local communities.

Mae Sai

Mai Sai is a border town set along the winding banks of the Mekong River, where the landscape shifts from riverine plains to forested hills. Its streets reflect a blend of local cultures and cross-border influences, with markets and trade activity shaping the daily rhythm. The town’s proximity to the Golden Triangle—the meeting point of three countries—imbues it with a unique regional character, visible in the mix of languages, goods, and traditions. Wat Phra That Doi Wao, perched on a nearby hill, offers a glimpse into the area’s spiritual heritage and provides panoramic views over the river and surrounding countryside. Beyond the urban area, nearby hill tribe communities maintain traditional lifestyles, contributing to the cultural fabric visible in local crafts and customs. The Mekong River itself is central to life here, supporting fishing, transport, and small-scale commerce. Mai Sai’s combination of natural features, cultural diversity, and active trade creates a distinctive environment where everyday life unfolds against a backdrop of historical and geographical significance.
