Rainforest and Skywalk
Embark on an enriching journey at the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), a premier institution dedicated to tropical forestry research, nestled just 16 kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur. Spanning an impressive 600 hectares, this lush expanse is a treasure trove of biodiversity, boasting approximately 15,000 species of plants. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by a knowledgeable nature specialist guide from FRIM, who will provide an insightful introduction to the institute and outline the day's activities.
Your adventure begins with a jungle trek along well-marked trails, where you will be captivated by a living museum of trees. As you navigate the verdant pathways, take a moment to marvel at the intricate, puzzle-like patterns of the tree canopy, punctuated by gaps that frame the sky above. The guide will enrich your experience by sharing the captivating stories of the rainforest, revealing the secrets of various plant species and intriguing facts that breathe life into the surroundings.
At the conclusion of your trek, enjoy a brief respite at a nearby local café, where you can savor a refreshing drink or snack at your leisure. If time allows, consider visiting the FRIM Research Gallery Museum to deepen your understanding of the institute's work. Following this, a short drive will take you to the Kepong Botanic Gardens, home to the remarkable Forest Skywalk. Here, you will traverse a 250-meter-long canopy walkway, expertly constructed with aluminum and reinforced with steel tubes, supported by sturdy guy wires. This architectural marvel features 11 towers and 8 bridges, with heights ranging from 18 to 50 meters, culminating in a breathtaking vantage point 141 meters above sea level. After this exhilarating experience, you will return to your hotel, filled with memories of the wonders of the rainforest.
Travel Notes
- The recommended age range for participants is 7 years and above, as children below this age are not permitted on the Forest Skywalk.
- Participants should have a moderate fitness level due to the jungle trekking involved. Be prepared for walking on uneven terrain.
- It is advisable to wear trekking or sports shoes, long pants, and long-sleeve shirts to protect against insects and the elements. Leech socks are also recommended for added protection.
- Insect repellent and sunblock lotion are essential to protect against bites and sun exposure. A hat or cap is also recommended for sun protection.
- Due to seasonal limitations, the Forest Skywalk is closed on Fridays and during specific unavailable dates: February 5-8 and March 10-11, 2027.
- Travel times may vary due to traffic conditions, especially when traveling to and from Kuala Lumpur. Plan accordingly to ensure timely arrival for the tour.
- Be prepared for potential crowds, particularly during weekends and public holidays, which may lead to longer waiting times at popular spots.
- Photography is encouraged, but be mindful of any restrictions in specific areas, especially within the research institute.
- Accessibility may be limited in certain areas of the rainforest; please inquire in advance if you have specific needs.
