Full Day Excursion Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat

Embark on a captivating full-day sightseeing tour of the Angkor Temples, where you will relive the glory of the great Khmer Empire and explore centuries of history alongside your knowledgeable tour guide. The day begins with a visit to the awe-inspiring Angkor Thom, aptly dubbed ‘The Great City’. Here, you will encounter the finest temples constructed by King Jayavarman VII during the late 12th and early 13th centuries. Starting from the Southern Gate, you will marvel at the imposing 23-meter-high stone sculptures of Avalokiteshvara, famously featured in the Tomb Raider movie.

As you continue your journey into the heart of the citadel, you will find the Bayon, a remarkable structure built at the end of the 12th century. The exterior is adorned with massive towers, each featuring serene faces carved into the gigantic stones. The walls of the Bayon are intricately engraved with bas reliefs that vividly illustrate the daily life and customs of the Khmer people. Your exploration will also take you to the Terrace of Elephants, the Terrace of the Leper King, and the twelve identical towers of Prasat Suor Prat. Following this, you will visit the Baphuon, Phimeanakas, and other renowned temples from the 11th century, each telling its own story of the past.

In the afternoon, you will delve into the magnificence of Angkor Wat, built under the reign of Suryavarman II. Recognized as one of the world's ancient wonders, this temple stands as the epicenter of Khmer Civilization and embodies the heart and soul of Cambodia. As you enter, you will feel as though you have stepped into another realm, greeted by the imposing moats, intricately carved outer walls, and avenues lined with ‘naga’ balustrades. The temples, constructed from laterites, rise majestically with symbolic lotus-bud carvings that captivate the senses.

Your journey will then lead you to the enchanting Ta Prohm temple, left in its natural state and enveloped by dense jungle. Here, gigantic roots, branches, and leaves intertwine with the temple's walls, roofs, and terraces, showcasing a stunning fusion of nature and man-made architecture. As the day draws to a close, you will have the opportunity to witness a breathtaking sunset over the plains of Angkor from the temple mountain of Phnom Bakhaeng, or alternatively, from the Pre Rup temple. From this vantage point, you will enjoy a panoramic view of the Angkor area, including the serene Western Baray lake, accessible only from Phnom Bakhaeng.

After a day filled with exploration and wonder, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

Destination Information

Siem Reap

Siem Reap is a city where ancient history and everyday life coexist amid a landscape shaped by waterways and lush greenery. Its streets reveal a blend of traditional Khmer architecture and modest urban development, reflecting a community rooted in local customs while engaging with growing tourism. The city’s proximity to the vast Tonle Sap Lake influences both its economy and atmosphere, with floating villages and fishing activities visible beyond the urban edges. Central to Siem Reap’s identity is the nearby Angkor Archaeological Park, where temple ruins rise from dense forest, offering insight into the grandeur of the Khmer Empire. This historical presence contrasts with the lively Old Market area, where vendors sell local crafts and produce, providing a glimpse into contemporary daily life. Beyond the city limits, Phnom Kulen National Park offers natural landscapes and spiritual sites, reinforcing the region’s connection to Cambodia’s cultural heritage. Together, these elements create a destination that balances the weight of its past with the rhythms of present-day community life.

Travel Notes

  • Ensure clients are aware of the limited capacity at Phnom Bakhaeng, which allows only 300 visitors at a time. Arriving early is advisable to secure a spot for sunset viewing.
  • Walking is a significant part of this tour; clients should be prepared for a full day of exploration, including uneven terrain and steps at various temple sites.
  • Recommend clients wear comfortable footwear suitable for walking on ancient stone surfaces, as well as breathable clothing to cope with the tropical climate.
  • Inform clients about the cultural significance of the temples, especially Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm, and encourage respectful behavior, such as maintaining silence in sacred areas.
  • Be mindful of potential crowds, especially at popular sites like Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm. Visiting earlier in the day may help avoid peak times.
  • Clients should carry sufficient water and snacks, as the tour involves long hours without many opportunities for breaks, particularly at the temple sites.
  • Photography is allowed at most sites, but clients should be aware of any specific restrictions, especially within certain temple areas.
  • Remind clients to bring sun protection, such as hats and sunscreen, as many temple areas are exposed to direct sunlight.
