Perfume River & Imperial Hue Highlights

Your day begins with a scenic transfer to the riverbank, where you will board a traditional Dragon Boat for a leisurely 40-minute cruise along the Perfume River, leading you to the iconic Thien Mu Pagoda. This revered site is divided into two sections: the front showcases the seven-storey octagonal Phuoc Duyen Tower, a symbol of Hue, while the rear serves as the living and worship space for resident monks. Thien Mu Pagoda has long been a spiritual center of Buddhism in central Vietnam and has played a significant role in historic events, including the poignant self-immolation of monk Thich Quang Duc in Saigon in 1963.

Continuing your journey, you will visit the Imperial Citadel, completed in 1833, where the Nguyen emperors ruled until 1945. Cross a stone bridge into the grounds to behold the ornate Thai Hoa Palace, with its lacquered and gold-inlaid columns that reflect the grandeur of the era. A one-hour pedicab ride offers a unique perspective on the citadel’s expansive scale and its rich historic atmosphere.

In the afternoon, travel to Tu Duc’s Tomb, nestled in a tranquil pine-forested area just 8 km from Hue. Constructed between 1864 and 1867, this poetic complex served both as a retreat and the final resting place of Emperor Tu Duc (1848–1883), whose reign marked the longest period of the Nguyen dynasty.

Your next stop is Khai Dinh’s Tomb, perched elegantly on Chau Chu Mountain and completed in 1931 after 11 years of meticulous construction. This architectural masterpiece harmoniously blends Vietnamese traditions with European influences, featuring intricate mosaics and elaborate detailing crafted in reinforced concrete.

On your return journey, visit a charming craft village renowned for producing Vietnam’s traditional conical hats (nón lá). Here, you can witness local artisans at work and perhaps pick up a handmade souvenir before heading back to your hotel.

Destination Information

Hue

Hue occupies a distinctive place in Vietnam’s central region, where the slow flow of the Perfume River shapes both the city’s layout and its atmosphere. The city’s compact scale and calm streets contrast with the busier urban centres elsewhere in the country, offering a quieter environment shaped by centuries of imperial rule. Hue’s defining feature is its extensive complex of historic sites, including the Imperial City, which reveals the architectural and cultural imprint of the Nguyen dynasty. Surrounding this core are the royal tombs scattered along the riverbanks, blending natural landscapes with intricate stonework and gardens. Religious structures such as Thien Mu Pagoda add to the city’s layered heritage, standing amid green spaces beside the water. Beyond its monuments, Hue’s everyday life reflects traditional Vietnamese culture, especially through local markets and street food that highlight regional culinary specialties. The city’s combination of historical depth, riverside setting, and measured pace creates an environment where visitors can engage with Vietnam’s past while observing the rhythms of contemporary local life.
