Embark on a captivating journey through the historical landscapes of Don Det and Don Khone Islands, which played a crucial role during the French colonization of Southeast Asia. As the formidable waterfalls obstructed their naval progress, the French ingeniously constructed a railway on Don Khone to navigate around these natural barriers.
Your day begins with a delightful bicycle ride to the Liphi Waterfalls, located on the opposite side of the island. While these falls may not rival the grandeur of Khone Phapheng, they offer a serene beauty that is well worth the visit. As you cycle, take in the picturesque scenery of verdant rice paddies and quaint villages, and be sure to stop and admire the remnants of an old locomotive, a testament to the French efforts to conquer the mighty Mekong. At the waterfalls, you may also have the opportunity to try the exhilarating Zipline (not included). After your adventure, take a moment to relax and enjoy lunch at your leisure (not included).
At 3:30 PM, you will depart from your hotel, accompanied by your boat driver, to embark on a tranquil Mekong sunset cruise. As you glide along the river, refresh yourself with an ice-cold Beer Lao while leaving behind the islands of Don Det and Don Khone, heading upstream towards the more secluded islands of the Mekong.
Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the 4000 Islands as you observe local fishermen going about their daily routines. A stop at Don Xang and Don Pueay allows you to visit the temple of the same name, where you can take a short walk and witness the vibrant life of the local community. As the sun begins to set, return to your boat and drift down the Mekong River, soaking in the breathtaking sunset views. This is the perfect moment to savor your drink as you make your way back to Don Det Island.
