Excursion Highlights

  • Explore the historical significance of Don Det and Don Khone Islands, pivotal during the French colonization of Southeast Asia.

  • Experience a serene Mekong sunset cruise, complete with refreshing Beer Lao and stunning views of the tranquil river and local life.

4000 Islands – Cycling, Waterfall & Sunset Cruise

Embark on a captivating journey through the historical landscapes of Don Det and Don Khone Islands, which played a crucial role during the French colonization of Southeast Asia. As the formidable waterfalls obstructed their naval progress, the French ingeniously constructed a railway on Don Khone to navigate around these natural barriers.

Your day begins with a delightful bicycle ride to the Liphi Waterfalls, located on the opposite side of the island. While these falls may not rival the grandeur of Khone Phapheng, they offer a serene beauty that is well worth the visit. As you cycle, take in the picturesque scenery of verdant rice paddies and quaint villages, and be sure to stop and admire the remnants of an old locomotive, a testament to the French efforts to conquer the mighty Mekong. At the waterfalls, you may also have the opportunity to try the exhilarating Zipline (not included). After your adventure, take a moment to relax and enjoy lunch at your leisure (not included).

At 3:30 PM, you will depart from your hotel, accompanied by your boat driver, to embark on a tranquil Mekong sunset cruise. As you glide along the river, refresh yourself with an ice-cold Beer Lao while leaving behind the islands of Don Det and Don Khone, heading upstream towards the more secluded islands of the Mekong.

Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the 4000 Islands as you observe local fishermen going about their daily routines. A stop at Don Xang and Don Pueay allows you to visit the temple of the same name, where you can take a short walk and witness the vibrant life of the local community. As the sun begins to set, return to your boat and drift down the Mekong River, soaking in the breathtaking sunset views. This is the perfect moment to savor your drink as you make your way back to Don Det Island.

Destination Information

Done Khong

Done Khong is a tranquil expanse of riverine islands nestled within the Mekong River’s broad flow, where water shapes both the landscape and local life. The area’s slow pace contrasts with the surrounding mainland, offering a setting where traditional agricultural practices remain integral to daily routines, visible in fields and along riverbanks. The islands’ natural environment supports a diverse ecosystem, with waterways weaving through lush vegetation and small villages. Scattered throughout are remnants of French colonial architecture, reflecting a historical period that left a subtle imprint on the built environment alongside enduring Khmer cultural influences evident in local customs and religious sites. The Si Phan Don archipelago, of which Done Khong is a part, is defined by its network of islands and channels, creating a distinctive spatial layout that encourages a close relationship between inhabitants and the river. This combination of natural features, historical layers, and ongoing rural life gives Done Khong a quiet yet textured character, inviting visitors to observe how the Mekong shapes both the environment and the rhythms of community life.

Travel Notes

  • The cycling route to Liphi Waterfalls is relatively short, making it suitable for a range of fitness levels, but participants should be comfortable with basic cycling.
  • While the Liphi Waterfalls are not as grand as Khone Phapheng Falls, they still offer a scenic experience and a chance to explore the surrounding area.
  • Be sure to check the availability of the Zipline at the waterfalls, as this activity is not included in the tour package.
  • Lunch is not included, so clients should plan to bring a packed meal or identify local dining options on Don Khone Island.
  • The sunset cruise offers a unique perspective of the Mekong River and its surroundings; clients should be prepared for a relaxing experience with opportunities to observe local life.
  • During the boat trip, clients can enjoy refreshments, but it's advisable to bring additional water or snacks for the journey.
  • Respect local customs when visiting temples, including dressing modestly and observing any specific rules or guidelines provided by the guide.
