Embark on a scenic journey from your hotel at around 8:00 AM, traveling approximately 50 kilometers over the course of 90 minutes to the revered Phnom Kulen. As you traverse the Cambodian countryside, take in the lush landscapes that unfold around you, setting the stage for the historical and spiritual significance of your destination.
Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the remnants of a small 9th-century laterite temple, quietly nestled near a serene waterfall. The tranquility of this setting invites you to explore the surrounding forested area on foot, where you will discover the famous riverbed adorned with hundreds of ancient lingams. These sacred carvings, hidden just beneath the flowing waters, symbolize fertility and hold deep significance in Hindu tradition.
Phnom Kulen is not only a site of natural beauty but also a place of profound religious importance for both Hindus and Buddhists. It was here, in 802 AD, that King Jayavarman II proclaimed independence from Java, laying the foundation for the Khmer Empire. The river, believed to be holy, is said to have been the site where the king bathed, redirecting its waters to reveal and carve the sandstone below. Among the intricate carvings, you will find a striking depiction of the Hindu god Vishnu resting on the serpent Ananta, accompanied by Lakshmi at his feet and Brahma emerging from a lotus flower.
The river cascades into a picturesque waterfall and natural pool, providing a refreshing and tranquil environment to unwind and appreciate the stunning surroundings.
Your exploration continues with a visit to Ang Tho, a 16th-century Buddhist monastery famed for its reclining Buddha, intricately carved into a massive boulder. Ascend the wooden staircase to reach the statue, where locals gather to pray, burn incense, and leave offerings, creating a serene and spiritual ambiance. In the afternoon, you will begin your return journey to Siem Reap, arriving back at your hotel later in the day.
